“All credit goes to ASU. They came out, they were hungry and they played to the last second.”
Two goals scored in the final two minutes of the first half was too much for the Lopes to handle. ASU added another insurance goal in the 62nd minute to help seal the victory, and drop GCU White to a 3-3 record in league play.
The first 43 minutes of the game saw the ASU offense applying pressure, but the GCU defensive back-line stood firm until a deflected cross that an ASU player put away right in front of the Lopes’ goal broke the scoreless tie.
With the Lopes on their heels, the Sun Devils added insurance with 15 seconds left in the first half on a shot from well behind the penalty box into the back of the net.
The Lopes’ best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 22nd minute when forward Alex Luna took a free kick that deflected off an ASU defender but hit the crossbar.
“ASU is a very strong opponent, and they are going to be in the hunt for the conference title for sure,” said Thompson. “We knocked them out of postseason play last year, and they are highly motivated to play us.”
Both GCU White and Purple will have their work cut out for them when they travel to the west coast this weekend to compete in the Aztec Cup, hosted by San Diego State University.
“We enter that tournament to give us a better idea of what our competition will be like in the region,” said Thompson. “The Arizona League is a little bit on the lower end compared to that level – at least as it stood last year when we played in it. With that being said, our league has improved dramatically since last year.”
