It is never too early to be No. 1.
The GCU club golf team is tied for No. 1 with Arizona State in the first NextGenGolf spring rankings for the National Collegiate Club Golf Association.
The Lopes and Sun Devils shared the team title in the first spring regional tournament. In that tournament at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott, GCU junior Zach Capel won the individual title by playing at even-par over two rounds. Senior teammate Jordan Yamamoto placed second at the regional tourney, finishing one stroke behind Capel.
Yamamoto is coming off a 10th-place finish at NCCGA fall nationals while Capel also finished 10th nationally at the NCCGA spring event a year ago.
“I’m enthusiastic about the progress we’ve made, not only in the level of our play but also the interest from our students in our club sport,” GCU club golf coach John Wasson said. “I’m excited about our potential moving forward to be in the hunt for national titles.”
The Lopes have their next spring regional tournament on April 8 and 9 in Sedona at Oak Creek Country Club.
